Preparing for your next visa - Further Leave to Remain (Married)

Congratulations on your successful visa application!

Sorry to interrupt your wedding plans, but you really should start planning for your next visa application. It is useful to start gathering your documents for the FLR (M) visa after you get married as the fiancé visa is only valid for 6 months.

The FLR (M) visa has very similar requirements to the fiancé visa, so you basically have most of the requirements. Except, the FLR (M) visa application requires at least 6 items of correspondence (from a minimum of 3 different sources) addressed to you and your partner at the same address as proof that you have been living together. This usually takes time to gather as it should spread across the period you and your partner have been living together.

You should start gathering any means of correspondence once you start living together. Categorise them according to letters to You, your partner and joint. This usually takes time to gather so its best to start early and accumulate them over time. If you wait till you are ready to apply for the next visa you might come up short. Be aware of this now so you don't realise too late and you have put them all in the bin.

The home office lists acceptable correspondence as:

  • Letters or other documents from government departments or agencies, for example HM Revenue and Customs, Department for Work and Pensions, DVLA, TV Licensing

  • Letters or other documents from your GP, a hospital or other local health service about medical treatments, appointments, home visits or other medical matters

  • Bank statements or letters

  • Building society savings books or letters

  • Council tax bills or statements

  • Electricity or gas bills or statements

  • Water rates bills or statements

  • Mortgage statements or agreement

  • Tenancy agreement(s)

I will be writing a separate blog post about the steps for applying for the Further Leave to Remain; so check soon.
